Archaeologists have found several ancient mummies with gold chips in place of their tongues. As intriguing as it might sound, there’s more than meets the eye.
The discovery was made at the central Nile Delta’s Quweisna on a site dating back to 1989. The place is also believed to have been inhabited between roughly 300 BCE and 640 CE during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods.

Golden-tongue Mummies: What’s the Truth?
The golden-tongued mummies were found in a recently discovered area of the archaeological complex, which also contained many other remains from three different periods of ancient Egypt’s history. Quite spectacular, isn’t it?!
Even though they have been discovered before, the golden tongues are a bit of a mystery. So, where does the truth really lie?
Gold was frequently used to create decorations for burial ceremonies in ancient Egypt. The shimmering substance was equated with the idea of eternity and was thought to actually represent the flesh of the gods, most likely similar to the famous Sun God, Ra.
Moreover, a golden tongue could’ve also represented a path to the light, even for some of the underworld’s darkest depths. Take a look at the picture below:

Back in 2021, a team of archaeologists in Egypt was excavating a 2,000-year-old site when they discovered a skull with shiny tongue-shaped jewelry framed in its gaping scary jaw. But there’s more.
By the end of 2021, three additional mummies with golden tongues dated back more than 2,500 years were located. The mummies discovered in Quweisna, according to Egyptian ministry officials, are in poor shape, and their secrets are eroding along with them. What a shame, right?!
Well, they’re obviously attempting to say something with their shiny golden tongues, but all we can hear is a painful silence. The archaeologists continue their work, and more information should soon shed more light on the case!
