The newest drama to air this year is a historical drama set in South Korea’s capital, Seul, back in 1987. The name of the drama is ’Snowdrop’, and the main leads are BLACKPINK’s Jisoo, a good-hearted university student who hides Soo Ho (Jung Hae In). Yoo In Na will play the role of a surgeon working at a state hospital and her character is named Kang Chung Ya.
Controversies with the synopsis
Sources mention that controversies started when the synopsis of the drama appeared online, and many netizens worried about the depiction of the historical time (the late 80’s), in the drama. The male character is a spy, infiltrated inside the activist movement. The controversy thickens due to another male character, involved with the Agency for National Security Planning, and portrayed as a just and righteous person.
What was the Agency for National Security Planning
According to sources, it was the former Korea Central Intelligence Agency and the year 1987, the year when the action in the drama takes place, was a special year for the formation of the South Korean Republic. The Agency for National Security Planning was the equivalent of an authoritarian agency, and the fact that a male character working there is portrayed as just and honest might stir controversy among viewers.
The Blue House issued a statement about ‘Snowdrop’
The same source mentions that the Blue House read the petitions and that there is no formal decision yet. The broadcasting company also explained that the drama is still currently being produced and that the controversies only occurred due to incomplete information regarding the synopsis.
The Blue House also mentions that if the Government interferes in the creative process, it would be a limitation of freedom of expression. But they will continue to communicate with the broadcasting company to make sure there are no violations of current regulations.
