In The Witcher 3, it can be challenging to determine Geralt of Rivia’s age because the magical creatures and monsters in the Witcher world usually live longer than humans – not to mention that witchers in particular are notoriously enigmatic.
The Netflix Witcher series and the ongoing book series offer a ton of details and backstories on the many monsters and characters in this fascinating universe. Therefore, Geralt’s age can be estimated based on the experiences he has had and what we know about a witcher’s lifespan in general.
Sadly, it’s unlikely that fans of Witcher 3 will get a clear answer as far as his age is concerned. When Geralt was a child, his mother gave him to Kaer Morhen, leaving his precise year of birth up for debate.
The Witcher novels give some background on Geralt’s age, although the games don’t stick to that timeframe and may change it depending on player decisions.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, thankfully, is set in 1272, at the time of the Continent’s conflict between Nilfgaard and Redania.
A year separates Geralt from Yennefer, who was born in 1173, according to the lore notes for The Witcher 3.
That being said, given that The Witcher 3 is set in 1272, Geralt should be between 98 and 99 years old.
Even though most witchers start out as human kids, they undergo mutations at the School of the Wolf that improve their skills, bodies, and senses.
Unfortunately, all of the colleges zealously control their ability to create new witchers.
The Wolves were no longer able to produce witchers as quickly after the Sacking of Kaer Morhen.
Witchers frequently die before they reach old age due to their risky lifestyles and mobs that go against non-human species.
Vesemir, the eldest witcher of Kaer Morhen has been fighting monsters for many decades.
However, Geralt has experienced several life-altering incidents and numerous wounds that may shorten his life expectancy.
A widespread misconception concerning Geralt’s age in The Witcher 3 is that, because of the raid on Kaer Morhen, he must be older than a century.
The Blood of Elves novel claims that the School continued to produce witchers for many years after the raid, contrary to popular belief.
Author Andrzej Sapkowski previously acknowledged during an interview that Geralt prefers to hide his age in order to avoid being turned down for a job by ignorant peasants and monarchs.
That being said, he constantly claims to be 50 or younger, thus often misleading fans of the saga.
Although it seems improbable that CDPR would ever reveal Geralt’s age, fans may learn more in the next Witcher 4 game.
Given the satisfactory resolution Geralt received in The Witcher 3’s ending, it’s also unclear whether gamers will play as him again in the series, however.
But unless Witcher 4 turns out to be some kind of prequel, Geralt is sure to be much older than in the Witcher 3.
