The legendary Mafia series of gangster games celebrated its 20th anniversary recently, and it marked the opportunity for the publisher 2K Games and Hangar 13 to confirm what the fans had been waiting for: a brand new Mafia game is in the works.
The official announcement comes through a blog post, so there’s no room for doubts. However, there’s still plenty more to wait until we get any footage or photos from the upcoming Mafia game. But at least fans now know for sure that a new game is in the works.
The next Mafia will be released a few years from now
We don’t even get a title for the next Mafia, but it’s safe to assume that it shall be called Mafia IV.
The statement coming from Roman Hladík, the Hanger 13 general manager, says:
I’m happy to confirm we’ve started work on an all-new Mafia project! While it’s a few years away and we can’t share anything more right now, we’re really excited to keep working on this beloved franchise and to entertain our players with new stories.
The latest game of the beloved series, meaning Mafia III, is already six years old. Having its action placed somewhere during the ’60s, the game was still not received as well as its predecessor, Mafia II. The latter represented the best game of the series, in our view. However, Mafia III still had some amazing particularities that make it a good game in the opinion of many fans of the series.
We must also remind you about Mafia: Definitive Edition that came out in 2020, although it was just a remake after the very first game of the series (aka Mafia I) that came out twenty years ago, in 2002. While the original game represents a creation that perhaps nobody would play today (no disrespect intended), it still represented the foundation of a fabulous open-world gangster game series that stands out mainly for its story and gameplay.
