Just at the end of last month, New York City officials announced that municipal public workers would have to get vaccinated or face weekly testing for the Covid-19 virus. The list of public workers included teachers and police officers. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio explained that the measures are meant to keep people safe as the state is battling with too many new covid-19 cases. On Monday, August 23, the mayor issued a new policy for public workers in education and city health.
De Blasio wants everyone inoculated by the end of September
As many public schools begin the new school year on September 13, the mayor wants teachers and school staff vaccinated against the new coronavirus. It is not clear yet what the penalty would be for those who refuse to follow the mandate. Statistics presented in the media show that 63 % of school employees are already vaccinated and the percentage might be higher. There have been teachers and other staff members that got vaccinated outside the New York state.
The first no-option mandate
The fourth wave has been overwhelming many stated in the U.S, and the medical system is operating at full capacity. To prevent more death and to stop outbreaks related to school infections, Bill the Blasio decided to issue a no-option mandate. This means that all teachers and school staff have to get vaccinated by September 27. Many showed their support, including School Chancellor Meisha Ross Porter, who believes this is extra protection for all children, including hers. There has been no bargaining between the school unions and the mayor, but meetings are scheduled for this week.
Other measures are also being implemented in New York City. For example, proof of vaccination is required for going to the restaurant, the gym, and other public places, and all hospital and nursing home staff have to get fully vaccinated to continue with their jobs.
