The PlayStation 5 has had a well-deserved reputation for being tough to acquire since since it was first released over two years ago. The process of purchasing one of Sony’s new-generation consoles has not been as simple as simply adding one to your shopping cart and waiting for it to be delivered as a result of a combination of a jumble of stock shortages and resellers purchasing out a significant portion of that already small supply.
It appeared that things were going to turn out better, with assurances that shortages may be alleviated by the year 2024, but the situation just took another turn in the wrong direction. According to a report by Kotaku, Sony has just increased the price of the PS5 in nearly all of the major regions where the PlayStation is sold. The new prices are in effect immediately, with the exception of Japan, where they won’t take effect until September 15th. In that country, the console will become more expensive.
It has been confirmed by Sony that the price of the PlayStation 5 would be significantly increased in the majority of the key locations where the PlayStation is sold, including the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and Japan.
In the United Kingdom, the price of the Disc version has increased to £479.99 (from £449.99), while the price of the Digital edition has increased to £389.99 (from £359.99). In the meantime, the price for the Disc version has increased to €549.99 (up from €499.99), while the price for the Digital edition has increased to €449.99 (up from €399.99).
You may have noticed that the United States of America is missing from that list; it would appear that gamers in that country have been able to get away with it. Sony has justified the price hike by stating that it is “necessary given the current state of the global economic landscape.”
