There’s bad news up ahead for those planning to buy a PlayStation 5 console in the near future. Sony posted an update to the PlayStation Blog just after midnight, announcing that those willing to possess the base PS5 Digital Edition will have to look deeper into their pockets and wallets.

Gamers in the UK will now need to spend £389.99, meaning a significant increase from the previous £359.99. This marks the second price hike since the debut of the console back in 2020, bringing the total increase to £70. The new price increase seems to be justified, considering that a lot of companies face economic challenges during these times.  Isabelle Tomatis, who is VP of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, confirms that the price increase comes amid a “challenging economic environment.”

Sony’s post is crystal clear:

With a backdrop of a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates, SIE has made the tough decision to raise the recommended retail price (RRP) of the PlayStation 5 console in select markets in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Australia and New Zealand.

Many of those willing to have a great gaming experience consider buying a PlayStation 5 console at one point or another, as the previous PlayStation 4 is clearly inferior when it comes to hardware and overall quality. Even though PS4 was the bee’s knees back in 2013 when it came out, PS5 offers a much more immersive gaming experience due to some powerful arguments. Thanks to its super-fast SSD, games load so fast on PS5 that you won’t have time to check your phone. The graphics are next-level — 4K, rapid frame rates, and ray tracing that makes puddles in video games look better than real-life ones. Not to mention that the new DualSense controller is like a tiny robot therapist for your hands, giving you tingles each and every time you crash, shoot, or sneak through a game.

That said, you already know that the PS5 isn’t exactly pocket change. If your wallet or bank account cries every time you open it, and you’re still having a good time with your PS4, there’s no shame in sticking with it a bit longer even though you consider yourself a true gamer.
