Samsung users might soon be able to repair their phones. With criticism from customers and ultimately US President Joe Biden, Samsung has become the latest high-tech business allowing its users to mend their own mobile phones.
For the first time, the firm has unveiled a program that would enable customers and third-party iFixit businesses alike to access authentic parts, tools, and step-by-step repair manuals for certain of its flagship Galaxy handsets. For a long time, Samsung (SSNLF) customers could only have their handsets repaired by the business itself.
Which phones can be fixed?
Users of the Galaxy S20, S21, and Galaxy Tab S7+ will be able to enroll in the new program beginning this summer, but owners of the S22 range will have to wait. iFixit, an online repair group that has previously collaborated with Motorola on a self-repair technology similar to this, has been announced as a partner with the firm.
It was revealed in November by Apple (AAPL) that a new initiative dubbed Self Repair Service would allow anybody with an Apple device to view repair instructions as well as buy replacement components. Users of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 will be the first to benefit from the initiative, which has not yet been formally announced. Prior to this announcement, Apple had said that the service will be rolled out to Mac machines using Apple’s newly developed M1 processor.
The use of non-removable memory or battery or the sealing of devices with special adhesive by manufacturers such as Samsung or Apple has been questioned as a way of making it more difficult for unaffiliated repair shops to access gadgets. Companies claim that this is done to guarantee that approved repair services are used to service the goods.
Consumers need self-repair alternatives if we are to increase the lifetime of gadgets for the benefit of our planet’s future. As a result, we anticipate seeing more businesses adopting this strategy in the years to come.
