The show’s creator, Craig Mazin, has hinted that key aspects of the upcoming second season of HBO’s The Last of Us would differ significantly from The Last of Us Part II video game.
The Last of Us Part II – the sequel to the first game, will be directly adapted for Season 2 of the HBO adaptation, Mazin previously stated.
While Part II will continue to serve as the foundation for Season 2’s overarching plot, Mazin has already suggested that he and co-producer Neil Druckmann may already be considering a departure from what viewers may anticipate.
During a recent press conference, Mazin responded to a question from ComicBook.com, briefly discussing the plans for The Last of Us Season 2 at the time.
In general, Mazin reiterated that The Last of Us Part II would act as the template for the future slate of episodes, but he also emphasized that fans don’t yet know what adjustments he could have in store.
Mazin hinted that there would definitely be some departures, even though he didn’t elaborate on what those changes may entail.
While talking about how season 1 of The Last of Us compares to the upcoming season, the creator said that “It will be quite different. Just as this season was also different. Sometimes it’ll be different radically and sometimes it’ll be barely different at all. But it is going to be different and it’ll be its own thing. It won’t be exactly like the game. It’ll be the show that Neil and I want to make.”
However, Mazin also acknowledged that he is quite anxious about working on The Last of Us and its second season when it comes to making changes.
If there is anything about Season 2 that the fans are nervous about, Mazin said that it is also something that he’s just as nervous about in the background.
As a result, Mazin won’t be trying to modify The Last of Us for no reason since every choice is carefully considered and thought through before being made.
When The Last of Us Season 2 will premiere on HBO and HBO Max is still a mystery, according to the network.
However, based on recent teases from star Pedro Pascal, Season 2 production may start before 2023 is through.
If this really does happen, Season 2 might be released in 2024 or maybe even 2025, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
