However, YouTube hasn’t been entirely sluggish when it comes to spam detection. During the first six months of 2022, more than 1.1 billion spammy comments were removed.
Spammers change tactics, but so does YouTube’s machine learning
On a Google Support page, the new changes on YouTube are presented and detailed. The platform reveals that it has added improved spam detection on comments, improved bot detection for live chats, as well as comment removal warnings & timeouts.
One of the statements sounds like this:
We’re launching a new feature that warns users when we’ve detected and removed some of their comments for violating our Community Guidelines. Additionally, if a user continues to leave multiple abusive comments, they may receive a timeout and be temporarily unable to comment for up to 24 hours. Our testing has shown that these warnings/timeouts reduce the likelihood of users leaving violative comments again.
The new rules of YouTube also mean that bots will be left out of live chats. This feature was implemented because bots can negatively impact the live-streaming experience of users. The devs are confident that “this update should make live streaming a better experience for everyone.”
